Passage themes
The Passover drawing near — Now before the feast of the passover
Jesus knows his hour — when Jesus knew that his hour was come
Returning to the Father — that he should depart out of this world unto the Father
Love for his own — having loved his own which were in the world
Love to the end — he loved them unto the end
Notes and references
“Complete love.” The word used here means both “complete” and “end,” so an alternative translation would be “he loved them to the end,” which would also be appropriate in context. However, Jesus demonstration of love which includes the cross is really to show the full extent of God's love for us.
